CDs Piratas decomisados en tiendas latinas de
Kensington Market

(Toronto) - The Toronto Police, acting on a complaint from the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA), served two Toronto retail locations with warrants on Monday and confiscated almost 800 pirated CD-R copies of Latin music repertoire, as well as a number of pirated DVDs and cassette tapes. In both cases, the store owners were each charged with one count of fraud under $5,000.

On 24 November 2003, the police executed Criminal Code Search warrants at the following addresses, where an estimated $17,500 worth of pirated repertoire was seized:

1. La Perola Supermarket, 247 Augusta Ave., Toronto;
2. El Buen Precio, 227 Augusta Ave., Toronto;

CRIA has a mandate to investigate infringement of copyright in its members' sound recordings and to seek enforcement of its members' rights. In Monday's instance, CRIA acted on a tip from a member company and laid a complaint with police.

"Music piracy continues to be a pervasive problem in Canada," observed CRIA President Brian Robertson. "The very fact that you can buy pirated copies CDs of Latin music at your corner supermarket is indicative of the prevalence of copyright infringement. CRIA applauds Toronto Police Service, 14 Division Major Crime Unit for their vigilance and initiative," he continued.

According to the most recent international statistics, global sales of pirated products more than doubled between 1999 and 2002. CD recordable (CD-R) piracy significantly contributed to the US$4.6 billion global piracy market in 2002.

The Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) is a non-profit trade organization that was founded in 1964 to represent the interests of Canadian companies that create, manufacture and market sound recordings. CRIA's membership is comprised of the major record companies, leading independent labels, and all manufacturers of compact discs and tapes. In all they represent 95% of the sound recordings that are manufactured and sold in Canada.
