Las Flores Charitable Foundation
In 1981, a group of Spanish speaking people from the Toronto area met to form an organization to council newly arrived immigrants from Central and South America and Spain, and to serve a variety of needs of this large and growing community Las Flores Charitable Foundation mandate has been fairly broad focused, on numerous occasions Las Flores has spearheaded fundraising drives to raise moneys in the aftermath of a disaster, i.e. Mexican earthquake, Colombia mudslides. Helped with visits by blind students from Honduras who were examined by experts in Toronto and aided terminally ill children from Latin America and Spain, to come to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children for medical treatment. In 1987, Councilor Tony O'Donohue initiated appeals for funds to build water projects in Honduras, and Central America, which were undertaken by Las Flores. In 1982, Las Flores commenced a plan to present cultural activities for the Hispanic community in the Toronto area. The International Hispanic Fiesta a three to four day event presenting music, dance and other artistic productions. Twenty countries are represented, coming from mainland Spain, South and Central America. In addition many talented Ontario residents also take part. Art displays, folkloric competitions between local communities round out the cultural activities. By 1989, the International Hispanic Fiesta had developed to a level that meant it could work with some autonomy from the founding organization. Provincial Letters Patent were granted to the Toronto International Hispanic Fiesta in 1989 - Ontario Corporation Number 803978. The event is now budgeted independently. Las Flores Charitable Foundation continues its diverse work with various organizations and community groups in Toronto. |
