Latin grooves at the Distillery Jazz Festival

Toronto heats up with the sounds of Cuba, Colombia and beyond at the Distillery Jazz Festival May 22-June 1. In addition to local talents Chiva and Nick Ali & Cruzao, the Grupo Roberto Martinez Pereira comes direct from Cuba for two searing performances of authentic Cuban grooves mixed with jazz and funk.

Chiva takes a Colombian conga player, a Colombian drummer, a funk bassist, a latin-jazz trumpeter and a DMC turntable champion, and has them play jazz standards over Colombian rhythms mixed with urban hip-hop grooves. Formed in early 2002, this group was inspired by the idea of fusing rare Atlantic coast Colombian rhythms with hip-hop against a latin-jazz backdrop. In Colombia, a "Chiva" is a multi-coloured bus piled high with personnel and goods. Though a ravaged country, the Chiva is a national symbol of free spirits and carefree attitudes in the face of anguish.
4 p.m., May 25 on the Trinity Street Stage

Roberto Martinez Pereira is a 19-year-old alto saxophonist from Camaguey, Cuba, now living in Havana. A precocious young artist with an exceptional understanding of his country's rhythms, he possesses an innate awareness of how to incorporate elements of jazz, funk and other non-Cuban ingredients into his music to achieve an impressive musical hybrid. His energetic stage presence and fearless leaps into improvisation have been amazing loyal audiences across Cuba, and have placed him in the vanguard of today's most impressive and promising young Latin musicians.
9 p.m., May 24 & 7:30 p.m., May 31 on the Pure Spirits Patio Stage
