La película Raising Victor Vargas, Dirigida por Peter Sollett, de gran
éxito en Nueva York será proyectada en Toronto a partir del Viernes
27 de Junio 4 de Julio en la sala numero 3 del Varsity
Cinema en 55 Bloor Street West, Manulife Centre. Esta película fue
realizada con la ayuda de la Fundación de Cine del Festival de Cannes
y el Instituto de Sundance.
El "Lower East Side" de Manhattan es el ardiente y romántico fondo en donde vive Víctor Vargas (VÍCTOR RASUK), que a pesar de sus pretensiones de ser un casanova con las chicas, en realidad tiene mucho que aprender acerca del amor.
Preocupado por perder su reputación si sus amigos se enteran de que está acostándose con su regordeta vecina "Fat Donna," (DONNA MALDONADO), Víctor se propone conseguir una nueva chica y conquistar a Judy Ramírez (JUDY MARTE). Conocida en el vecindario como "Juicy Judy," ella se convierte, muy a su pesar, en el blanco de los avances amorosos de Víctor. Después de varias humillaciones públicas con sus amigos, Víctor decide negociar con el hermano menor de Judy, Carlos (WILFREE VÁSQUEZ) para que lo ayude a conquistarla. Carlos lo ayudará a cambio de que a su vez, Vicky (KRISTAL RODRÍGUEZ), la hermana menor de Víctor, salga con él. El plan de Víctor funciona, y Judy lo tolera como "su nuevo hombre," convirtiéndolo en el chico más popular del barrio.
Desafortunadamente, el comportamiento de Víctor afecta a los miembros de su familia que viven con él. Su abuela (ALTAGRACIA GUZMÁN) es muy chapada a la antigua y está convencida que la actitud de su nieto es una mala influencia en la casa y que es muchacho muy malo. Víctor se ve atrapado entre recobrar la confianza de su abuela, ayudar a su hermano y hermana a lidiar con las confusas situaciones de la vida y, a la misma vez, tratar de conquistar genuinamente el corazón de Judy. En el proceso, Víctor descubre que hay una gran diferencia entre "actuar como hombre" y tomar las decisiones correctas para convertirse en "el hombre de la casa."
Filmada en la zona baja del Este de Manhattan (Manhattan's Lower East Side), con actores no-profesionales, Peter Sollett (FIVE FEET HIGH AND RISING), en su debut como director de largometrajes, nos ofrece una magnífica película que explora detenidamente los tropiezos de la adolescencia y el proceso de madurar de una manera tierna, genuina y divertida. El libreto, escrito por el propio Sollett, fue desarrollado en el Laboratorio de Escritores auspiciado por el Festival de Sundance (Sundance Screenwriters Lab) y también contó con el apoyo de La Cinéfondation de Paris.

Manhattan's gritty, majestic Lower East Side is the sweltering romantic playground for Victor Vargas (VICTOR RASUK), a self-styled teenaged Casanova who, despite his adolescent hubris, has a lot to learn about love.
Eager to protect his street-cred after his friends discover he's been sleeping with upstairs neighbour "Fat Donna" (DONNA MALDONADO), Victor sets out to nab a new girl. Much to her annoyance, popular "Juicy Judy" Ramirez (JUDY MARTE) finds herself the object of Victor's relentless attention. After a humiliating series of public rejections, Victor strikes a bargain with Judy's younger brother Carlos (WILFREE VASQUEZ). In exchange for a date with Victor's younger sister, Vicky, Carlos will help Victor win Judy's affections. His plan proves successful and Judy agrees to tolerate him as "her new man," securing Victor's place high atop the neighbourhood's social pecking order.
Unfortunately, his hilariously cantankerous old-school grandmother (ALTAGRACIA GUZMAN), with whom he and his siblings live, is convinced that Victor's teen-age sexual antics make him a bad kid. Caught between regaining his grandmother's trust and helping his kid brother and sister negotiate the oft-baffling ways of the world, Victor discover that there's a difference between acting like a man and becoming one. As he and Judy slowly start to trust and be trusted, Victor learns that a lot of love has been put into RAISING VICTOR VARGAS.
Peter Sollett's feature debut is a stunning piece of filmmaking that carefully explores the stumbling blocks of growing up, capturing adolescence at its most tender, funny and genuine. His script was developed through the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, a prestigious program which offers emerging artists the opportunity to work intensively on their feature film scripts with the support of established screenwriters. Sollett also extensively workshopped the film with the support of La Cinéfondation in Paris.
